Over the last several years, our congregation has conducted a backpack program that seeks to ensure that children are provided with food during those times when other resources may not be available and are at most at risk for hunger. By partnering with Beckley Elementary and Stanaford Elementary, children of need are identified and will receive bags of non-perishable, child-friendly items that are distributed every Friday and on the last day before a holiday. It has been shown that such programs can offer a number of benefits:

• Reduces absenteeism

• Improves attention span

• Raises academic performance

• Increases self esteem

 

So quite simply, the primary goal is to have healthier children who miss fewer days of school and who are better able to be successful in school and in life. This program is supported by the generosity and support of the members of the North Beckley Church of Christ.
